In my world, weekends are often meant for catching up on life’s responsibilities, reading books and getting work done. The latter two usually occur at coffeeshops; my home away from home. Besides being a coffee lover, they provide a certain type of comfort for me. A way to escape the reality of life while simultaneously providing an atmosphere to be productive. This particular day I chose to visit the Urban Bean Co coffee shop in the Capitol Park Historic District. Located at the corner of Griswold and Grand River, I'd passed by several times before but never stopped in because they were always closed while in the area. Fortunately, they were open this day so I went for it. Beyond its quaint and eclectic atmosphere, the view of the city captivated me most.
Sitting in the loft space, it offered a unique perspective of the neighborhood; a different view of an area I should frequent more. Redevelopment in this area is rapid. With the fairly recent openings of The TEN Nail Bar, Lear Innovation Center, The Albert apartments, The Detroit Institute of Music Education, Go! Sy Thai and the soon-to-open 28 Grand micro apartments, the landscape is certainly changing. Looking forward to watching the area unfold into what I hope is an inclusive destination for all of the city.
